Leerdoelen In the course, students will be introduced to both academic theoretical research and academic applied (problem-solving) research. Focus will be on the latter.
Furthermore, students will learn to correctly apply basic statistical techniques.
Upon completion of the course the student is able to:
1. translate a stylized problem into a statistical problem.
2. solve the translated problem by applying the appropriate theory.
3. compare and contrast samples from different populations, using parametric or non-parametric tests.
4. test if data meet the required assumptions of the statistical models used.
5. use SPSS for descriptions and inference.
6. complete a simple literature search.
7. develop a simple conceptual model.
8. report about literature search and about business research according to academic standards.
Omschrijving Being able to analyze business problems (i.e., conducting sound applied business research) is an important skill for every business studies graduate. In this course the Regulative Cycle, and particularly the diagnostic phase in this cycle, is used to explain how to design and conduct business research in a scientifically sound way.
In the research practical, students will perform a literature study (the first assignment of the practical) in order to conceptualize a business problem, including the potential causes of the problem.
In both applied business research and theoretical business research, statistical methods and techniques may play a major role. This module will lay the foundations for correct and relevant use of basic statistical techniques. In order to achieve this, attention will be paid to (1) understanding statistical concepts in a business context, (2) technical skills for data analysis, and (3) assessment and interpretation of results from statistical analyses.
Statistics will be taught in the lectures and tutorials (and assessed in the exam), but the statistical methods and techniques play a role in the second assignment of the methodology practical. In this assignment, students have to formulate two hypotheses and to test these hypotheses on secondary data.

Finally, the students are introduced to participating in experimental research: Participation in research in the FEB behavioral research lab (1 hour) is an obligatory part of this course.
Uren per week 6
