Leerdoelen | Upon completion of this module the student is able to 1. Explain the concept of the (higher-order) derivative of a function on real numbers. Use the Binominal Theorem to reformulate mathematical expressions. 2. Determine the limit-value of a sequence of real numbers. Calculate the summation of arithmetic and geometric sequences. 3. Use various differentiation techniques, such as the power law, the product rule, the quotient rule and the chain rule. Use various integration techniques, such as (inverse) substitution, partial integration, and partial fractions. 4. Perform simple calculations with complex numbers, such as addition, multiplication, division and the transformation to and from polar coordinates. 5. Calculate the solution(s) of a system of linear equations by gaussian elimination and backward substitution. Perform various matrix operations such as addition, multiplication, inversion and co-factor expansion. 6. Classify a given function on real numbers as being continuous and/or differentiable. 7. Associate the proper solution technique to a given one-dimensional integral. 8. Associate the proper differentiation technique to a given function on real numbers. 9. Prove that a given sequence of real numbers converges to its limit value. 10. Prove continuity for a given function on real numbers. 11. Prove simple relations using the technique of Mathematical Induction. |

Omschrijving | Main educational goal: The student will learn to formulate in a mathematically correct way and acquires understanding of the mathematics underlying economic models. The student obtains the skills to prove results, and to solve problems. Topics: Introduction to analysis and linear algebra, calculus, mathematical induction, complex numbers. |
