Leerdoelen Upon completion of the course the student is able to:
1. Develop knowledge and understanding of key theories and topics in strategy research.
2. Summarize, integrate, and critically evaluate theoretical and empirical research in strategy.
3. Reproduce and apply key topics and theories within the field of strategic management.
4. Develop skills to effectively communicate and defend research.
Omschrijving This course is aimed at enhancing students’ knowledge of the foundations of strategic management research. It is an introductory course especially indicated for future researchers in strategic management or related areas of inquiry, such as international business, organization theory, sociology of organizations, industrial organization, entrepreneurship, marketing strategy, and corporate finance.

Along the course, we will introduce and examine a broad range of theories and focus on different research topics informed by these theories. Overall, these theories and topics will help us to answer the fundamental question of strategic management research: Why firms differ in performance. Through the seminars, we will review the main explanations of performance differentials among firms, such as the industry-based view, the resource-based view, industry dynamics, corporate strategies, and issues related to the implementation of these strategies.

Entreevoorwaarden For students in the Research Master in Economics & Business. Students are expected to have basic familiarity with strategic management topics. So, having a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Economics is important. Students without such a basic knowledge are advised to read a standard textbook on the course prior to the start of the seminars. Students should also be equipped with the necessary analytical and language skills to: (1) diagnose problems of organizations; (2) propose workable solutions, and; (3) present ideas in a structured and systematic manner.
