Omschrijving | Three topics are analyzed in depth: Show that trade is beneficial from a welfare point of view but that: showing this is difficult, and that not all agents benefit from more trade and globalization. Furthermore, one of the remarkable recent findings w.r.t. international trade is that most international trade is done by a limited number of firms. These findings are based on micro-firm data-sets that only recently have become available. Findings like these have been a stimulus for theoretical research. The most successful study in this respect is the recent work by Marc Melitz; his model has become the standard model to analyze data sets on heterogeneous firms. Finally, The recent trend of slicing-up-the value chain is beneficial for firms (and we will show why) but this also affects the organization structure of global firms. How organizational structures need to be adapted is also part of the course. |
