Omschrijving How do we measure growth and development in countries? Traditionally, economists rely on the concept of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, it is well acknowledged that measuring GDP is not straightforward, and that although it provides a good first pass, welfare is a much broader concept (beyond GDP). Is economic theory capable of providing alternative measures? In this course we will show that it does. We start by laying out the main trends in the world economy, and have a first pass on its determinants using advanced measurement techniques of comparative output and productivity levels. We move on discussing recent alternatives to the measurement of long-run GDP including real wages used in economic history, social indicators and even night-lights seen from outer space. Measures beyond GDP including welfare, inequality and sustainability will also be addressed. Throughout the course the emphasis is on theory-based measurement frameworks.
