Omschrijving | Why are some countries poor and some countries rich? This course will introduce you to the debate about sources of growth and development in today's world. Global economic growth has been rapid since the 1950s, but uneven across countries and major challenges to growth have recently appeared. We start by laying out the main development trends in the world economy. Subsequently we focus on various topics based on advanced academic articles . These include macro-issues (History and Institutions, Poverty and Inequality, and Structural Change) as well as more micro determinants (Savings, Capital and Insurance Markets). | ||||||||

Entreevoorwaarden | For students in the Research Master in Economics & Business, in particular those interested in Development and Growth issues. Prior knowledge includes the ReMa courses Microeconomic Analysis and Macroeconomic Analysis. An intermediate course in Development Economics (BSc level) is expected, but not mandatory. | ||||||||
