Leerdoelen Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
1. Explain and critically assess theories of rationality and the systematic ways in which people depart from rationality (e.g., reliance on heuristics, biases)
2. Reproduce and critically assess theories and findings on interdependent decision making (behavioral game theory, social dilemma's)
3. Reproduce and critically assess theories and findings on the relations between motivation, emotion, and decision making
4. Reproduce and critically assess basic psychological theories and findings regarding consumer decision making
5. Reproduce and critically assess theories and findings in the area of behavioral ethics
6. Design, execute, analyze, and report studies in the area of behavioral decision making (both in writing and orally)
Omschrijving Decision making is a process of evaluating alternative courses of action to reach certain goals, eventually resulting in a choice for a particular course of action. In behavioral decision making research, the focus is not so much on what people should choose (i.e., what the best course of action is), but more on how people choose. For example, people often depart in predictable ways from rationality, and their decision making processes are affected by momentarily salient motives or emotions. This affects whether or not people postpone decisions, whether they act in self-interested or pro-social ways, and whether they buy unnecessary products. In this course, we examine basic theories and findings from behavioral decision making, focusing on issues of rationality and irrationality (e.g., heuristics, biases), interdependent decision making (social dilemma’s, experimental games), and the role of motivation and emotions. We also zoom into three areas of application: choice avoidance, consumer decision making, and ethical decision making.
