Leerdoelen Upon completion of the course the student is able to:
1. Outline the most important public policy instruments and welfare programs that governments use to implement their social policy
2. Identify motivations that warrant the implementation public policies.
3. Analyze the key trade-offs that governments face when designing social programs
4. Critically assess studies that analyze and evaluate the effect of social programs.
5. Engage in public discussions about the usefulness and effectiveness of social programs.
6. Present a coherent argument and formulate proposals that improve the current social policy mix.
Omschrijving This course:
- analyzes the impact of social insurance programs (such as unemployment insurance, disability insurance and health care) and of the tax system on individual behavior, poverty rates and health outcomes.
- discusses (optimal) design of social insurances schemes: trade- off between providing a decent coverage to the population and the existence of moral hazard and adverse selection problems.
