Leerdoelen The course goal is to furnish master students with solid knowledge of the academic debate and practical implications of organizational design as process and outcome.
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
1. Knowledgeably discuss the opposing positions of design as prescription and description;
2. Critically assess extant literature on Organizational Design;
3. Identify practical implications of dominant concepts, models and theories for the (re)design of (components of) the organization;
4. Compare consequences of using objectivistic versus social constructionist perspectives on organizing for design activities;
5.Develop specific suggestions for organizational (re)design.
Omschrijving As organizations strive for competitiveness in an increasingly complex marketplace, they seek to configure their resources in ways that support business strategies. The term organizational design refers both to the process of reconfiguring elements of the organization, and the outcome of this process, such as specific design solutions. Organizational design might seem a mere ‘technical’ task of shaping organizational architecture (i.e., strategy, structure, people and technology). However, the social system dynamics inherent in organizations ask for a richer view that accounts for the socio-political and interpretive, sense-making properties of organizations and their effects on design process. Further organizations are not isolated entities but embedded in an environment. The technical, sociopolitical, and interpretive perspectives also serve to analyze how organizational relations with the environment impact on design issues.

If students have not followed any bachelor course in this field, we recommend that they read up on organizational forms, contingency theory, organizational culture, decision making, power, conflict and politics based on the following sources:
