Omschrijving Capitalism, shareholder wealth, employee rights, consumer freedom, obligations towards suppliers and competitors, civil society and the government—moral and political questions abound in business. But research in moral psychology shows that we often fail to see what is morally important about a situation. And if we do see it, we often don’t know how to deal with it. And even if we know how to deal with it, we often don’t act accordingly. This course takes a practical approach to business ethics. Its main objectives are to foster sensitivity to moral and philosophical aspects of decision making in business; to teach analytic skills that help you take a position in moral debates and to give a reasonable justification for your position; and to develop ways to successfully cope with dilemmas and issues that arise in business. We examine the main theories in the philosophy of business, business ethics, and moral psychology; we consider specific issues concerning capitalism and the theory of the firm, employees, consumers and other stakeholders; and we look at ways in which business interacts with NGOs, governments and civil society in a context of globalisation and focussed on sustainability.
