Leerdoelen  The objective is to achieve that the student is capable of applying thermodynamic concepts in an applied industrial context. The student will be able to: 1. Describe the fundamental principles of thermodynamics. Apply thermodynamics concepts in practice by: 2. Identifying the problem and chose the right thermodynamic model. 3. Apply numerical calculations. 4. Interpret and evaluate the final result. 5. Get familiar with creative thinking and develop a better understanding of thermodynamics in practice. 

Omschrijving  The course is divided in theory (hoorcollege) and exercises, at the end of every chapter. The course starts with 2 colleges about necessary fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics. Afterwards, pure properties of substances (density, energy, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy) will be dealt with. Water will be used as an example to explain how its properties change as a function of temperature and pressure. Water represents one of the most widely applied thermodynamic systems in practice (boilers, heat exchangers, turbines, etc. use steam). An ample part of the course will deal with the Law of conservation of Entropy (ideal processes). Also, the concept of “ideal mixtures” will be introduced and solving phase equilibria. With the introduction of real mixtures, we will go even one step further. A short description of existing models will be given. Finally, three important applications will be looked at in detail: high pressure applications, the effect of chemical heat (from a home heating system to industrial burning furnaces) and chemical reaction equilibria (reactors). Every chapter starts with an overview of subjects to be treated. A summary will be given and the end which gives a short overview of the basic concepts, important equations and the relevance of the material. Finally the obtained knowledge will be tested by means of solving problems, coming from real practice and industry. Every chapter finishes with examples. A systematic, informal and interactive way of working is applied in solving the problems.
