Omschrijving This course focuses on climate change adaptation in urban settings. It explores political, technological, and social innovations that hold the potential to address contemporary adaptation challenges in urban areas. The course builds on the understanding developed in the first two courses of the CAG Master's track by applying and further developing key ideas in relation to urban adaptation. This is done based on the critical reading of academic and grey literature, active learning, and related field visits/workshops in cooperation with our partner networks.

The preliminary course outline includes weekly sessions on urban adaptation related topics such as theories of urbanization and urban governance, networked approaches to urban adaptation at multiple scales, as well as a distinct focus on innovation and digitalization for urban sustainability and adaptation, for example in the context of the ‘smart city’.

Politically, the course focuses on the critical assessment of urban development related theories, methods, and observations or experiences, incl. (peri-)urban informality and situated urban political ecologies to assess urbanization dynamics with regard to housing, social cohesion, infrastructure, and governance. During weekly classes, students are encouraged to select the cities, networks, or urban systems of their interest for their group and individual contributions.
