Leerdoelen  The aim of this course is to develop the concepts and techniques of the quantum physics of relativistic particles. At the end of this course the student should be able to: 1. calculate the Hamiltonian and equations of motion of a spin0 and spin1/2 Lagrangian and to derive the conserved charge resulting from a continuous symmetry. 2. perform the canonical quantization of simple theories and to derive the expression of conserved charges in terms of ladder operators. 3. calculate and explain the properties of propagators, and explain what these results imply for causality. 4. analyse the Dirac equation, explain its significance and implications and derive its transformation properties under the Lorentz symmetry. 

Omschrijving  This course extends the formalism of quantum mechanics to relativistic systems. This requires the concept of field theory. We discuss the KleinGordon and Dirac equations for massless spin0 and spin1/2 fields, respectively. Secondly, we perform the canonical quantization of these field theories. We discuss the conceptual and calculational aspects of the resulting operators, states and propagators. Throughout this course we emphasize the similarity to and differences with quantum mechanics.

Entreevoorwaarden  The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from the courses Quantum Physics 1 and Quantum Physics 2 of the BSc Physics degree programme.  
Opmerkingen  The assessment consists of three separate parts:  Formulating questions via Perusall, whose average contributes 10% to the final grade;  Twice grading of dedicated homework assignments, whose average contributes 10% to the final grade;  A written exam at the end of the course, which will contribute 80% to the final grade. This course was registered last year with course code NARQM12
