Uitgebreide vaknaam Law and Legal Skills - IT for Lawyers
Leerdoelen This part of the Legal Skills module has two main aims. Firstly it aims to introduce students to different digital resources they will need to access during their period of study and later in law practice. The second aim is to provide the necessary skills to decipher citations and in turn to reference their work appropriately.
On the successful completion of these sessions, a student will be able to:

a. critically decide which resources can best lead to the materials one is looking for;
b. demonstrate the ability to use information technology resources in legal research and writing projects;
c. present information retrieved from the various information technology resources in a clear manner; and
d. correctly decipher citations and properly reference materials used following standard citation formats.
Omschrijving This part of the Legal Skills module introduces important online legal resource tools needed when studying European and International law. Both publicly accessible tools (such as EUR-Lex, United Nations Treaty collection etc.) and those available through the RUG Law Library portal (such as Westlaw etc.) are used.

Each workgroup session is interactive with students and lecturer discussing and examining the features of the online resources being used in that session, when and where they may be used and how to cite resources accessed.

A number of tasks are assigned per session to practice skills learnt and/or reinforce skills gained in previous sessions.

  • This course is only accessible for students who are registered for the Bachelor's degree 'International and European Law' or pre-master programme students provided that the course is part of the pre-master programme. UCG-students following the track leading to access to the English-taught LLM programmes can also be granted access to this course.
  • This course is not open to exchange students.

  • This part does not have a separate study load. The 10 ECTS for the module 'Law and Legal Skills' will be awarded as soon as both parts of the module (Law and Legal Skills: the Dutch example and Law and Legal Skills - ITL)have been passed.
