Leerdoelen On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1) critically reflect on key constitutional principles and the functioning of the European Union Internal Market and its constitutional foundations;
2) synthesize key writings and thinking on the constitutional and institutional developments of the European Union;
3) demonstrate an ability to use legal analytical skills, legal research and writing in this specialized area of law.
Omschrijving The aim of the course is to discuss the working of the EU's internal market from the fundamental constitutional perspective, focusing on some of its key constitutional principles and options for future development of the European Union at an advanced level. Students are encouraged to think critically and offer their own ideas. The course will serve as a basis for practice or research in this broad area of law and will offer a broader perspective than strictly legal, also inspired by the literature from social sciences and humanities.
The course:
- Examines key constitutional principles of the Internal Market that have shaped the European Union as developed in the Treaties, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union;
- Surveys each of the European Union institutions examining their functioning and effect on the constitutional development of the Union in the context of the day-to-day co-shaping of the Internal Market together with the Member States of the Union;
- Critically reviews a wide compendium of scholarly literature on the topics discussed.

The grade is based 100% on a critical research paper of up to 7.000 words (with references) engaging with one of the topics relevant for the course. Students submit a written assignment for every class, which is based on the required readings. Those who fail to get a pass on three assignments are not entitled to submit the paper.
