| Leerdoelen | 1. Define and discuss key concepts from the discipline of population geographies, and related disciplines 2. Describe the general development of the discipline of population geographies and related disciplines (in particular demography, cultural geography, sociology) 3. Describe and critically reflect on the modernization process, and its effects on people-place relations and demographic developments 4. Describe and reflect on the causes and consequences of demographic changes and the related major societal challenges, including how these are related to place 5. Critically describe the major drivers of population change in the Netherlands, Europe and worldwide: fertility, mortality, migration, age structures and household formation 6. Describe and reflect on theories of demographic behaviour, including the First and second Demographic Transition Theory and the life course approach 7. Calculate and interpret basic demographic measures such as age-specific fertility and mortality rates and total fertility rates 8. Conduct an interview to practice the research process and assess how the place-related demographic behaviour of their generation differs from their grandparents’ generation and relate this to the context of demographic changes 9. Cooperate with peers in learning how to perform basic demographic calculations, and in practicing these 10. Critically read academic handbooks and literature, and reproduce key facts, figures and ideas from these 11. Recognize the capabilities that people trained as population geographers have for the labour market. |

| Omschrijving | The course module Population Geographies deals with population trends, demographic behaviour and their inseparable link with place and culture. The most important drivers of demographic trends and challenges (i.e., fertility and household formation, mortality, migration) and their relation to place and the perception of place are studied with regard to content as well as methodology. Dynamic individual behaviours are emphasized within their socio-cultural context. Theories explaining demographic changes and cultural geographical theories on the concepts of place, culture and power will be discussed with regard to the relationship between people and places. Policy implications are addressed. Amongst the specific socio-spatial questions discussed are aspects of demographic change like population growth and decline, migration, and ageing; health and place; ethnicity, nationalism and the nation-state; inclusion-exclusion and othering; youth culture. |
