Leerdoelen The student is able to:
- work with physical landscape information sources;
- apply basic landscape research methods and techniques;
- have knowledge of general landscape theories and concepts and is able to apply those to a specific landscape;
- describe the natural/physical geographical and cultural development of landscapes of the Netherlands at the national scale;
- Recognise physical geographical phenomena in the field;
- collect and process physical landscape field data of a Dutch landscape and convert this to structured information.
- relate geological, soil and landscape structures to historical and current land use of the terrain;
- discuss landscape issues with people from other spatial disciplines;
- develop and test a spatial theoretical model of a landscape phenomenon;
- carry out a research process under supervision in a group.
Omschrijving In several lectures, day-long practicals, students will work with landscape information sources, like thematic maps, soil monoliths, spatial digital datasets, background literature and field data. During an external fieldwork week (Northern Netherlands), small groups of students will investigate the physical landscape conditions and land use of a Dutch rural area, which acts as a case study on the relationship between geological, natural and cultural history and current use of the landscape. During this week, the observations in the field will be confronted with theories from literature. The groups will also carry out a small-scale self-defined investigation. The results will be presented during an excursion and be reported afterwards.
