1 | Crossing Borders | LEL024B05 |
This course examines depictions of alienated figures that find themselves at the intersection of cultures, and scrutinizes texts that bring the experiences of marginalized subjectivities to the centre. Themes of displacement pervade contemporary fiction, where crossing borders has become an economic and political necessity, and contemporary writers have employed the language of exile and transnationalism that featured in many earlier texts. We will consider how the terms of exile set out in more Modernist works have been employed by later authors to articulate border crossings of gender, race, and sexuality. Not surprisingly, many 20th century theorists have reflected on exile and the identity of movement, and this course will engage considerations of flânerie, Said’s “Exile,” and Anzaldua’s “Borderlands” to explore changing representations of “in-between” selves. We will begin with Henry James’s story of a privileged American woman in Europe, and move through to Viet Thanh Nguyen’s recent collection of stories where characters are forced from their homelands and grapple with an uprooted sense of self. Exploring the constellation of these texts by writers from a variety of backgrounds will, of course, reveal the differences that circumstances of experience have on perceptions of selfhood, but also how the vernacular of loss and estrangement can be traced back to common sources. |
