This course unit offers a mix of weekly seminars and learning that will guide and support you in setting up, conducting and reporting your research for your research paper. During the seminars we will deal with all the necessary steps of setting up and conducting a research project as well as reporting on it in a research paper. We will guide and discuss this process from the first brainstorms about which topic to choose to polishing the final version of your thesis. This class builds on the theory and knowledge you have acquired in the courses Intro to Journalism Studies and Disruption and Innovation in Journalism. Though everybody writes their research paper individually, in this class we will discuss and review all your work together, thereby benefitting from the specific, but often shared experiences and problems you encounter, making it easier to successfully pass this course.
To limit the scope of this project the research papers will be geared towards journalism’s shift to the digital age, focusing on the implications for and changes of journalistic output, and on the changing behavior of news consumers and audiences.
NOTE: For this to work (and for you to be able to succeed in this course) all students are expected to have read all weekly readings and to have prepared all assignments before each class. Students are expected to be prepared to discuss the material. As a guide for discussions, it can be helpful to come to the seminars with some thoughts you have written down about the readings or assignments |
