4 | Chaucer | LEO006P05 |
Geoffrey Chaucer is the most widely studied medieval English writer. His works, composed in the second half of the fourteenth century, reflect and inflect existing English and European literary traditions. French, Italian, and classical influences shimmer through Chaucer’s poems, which engage with an almost encyclopaedic range of topics and interests. Chaucer’s own life is exceptionally well-documented, and his many public roles and jobs offer a window on the social, political, and literary culture of late-medieval London, England, and Europe. |

5 | Controversial Literature and Literary Co | LEL022B05 |
Literature that pushes against social norms, value systems, traditions, and inherited worldviews of a given community are of vital interest for the literary critic and the social historian alike. Texts that address stigmas and taboos not only reveal the parameters of group belonging (what and who lies outside of it, and what must be concealed, repressed, or denied to become or remain part of it); they also tell us about the social role of literature and force new perspectives on ourselves, our histories, and our possible futures. Oftentimes literary controversies are concerned with the truth-claims of fiction, and with the authenticity or authority of the voice that proffers that fiction. This course asks what literary controversy is, why it arises in some cases and not others, and to whom literature is controversial. |

6 | Controversy and Dispute | LEO021B05 |
The medieval world, like today’s, was full of controversy and dispute about issues related to social, religious and intellectual life. People debated about the position of women in society, ways of combatting disease, whether young was better than old, or vice-versa, the virtues and vices of different classes, which way best to pursue one’s religion, the Us versus the Other, etc. In this module we will study a number of texts from medieval England in which controversial issues and debates about them appear, either explicitly or implicitly. Not only will we discover a world full of debate and dissent, but we will also explore cross-references to present-day issues of gender, identity, crime and punishment, morality, fundamentalism and social cohesion. The choice of texts may depend on current issues. |

7 | Crossing Borders | LEL024B05 |
This course examines depictions of alienated figures that find themselves at the intersection of cultures, and scrutinizes texts that bring the experiences of marginalized subjectivities to the centre. Themes of displacement pervade contemporary fiction, where crossing borders has become an economic and political necessity, and contemporary writers have employed the language of exile and transnationalism that featured in many earlier texts. We will consider how the terms of exile set out in more Modernist works have been employed by later authors to articulate border crossings of gender, race, and sexuality. Not surprisingly, many 20th century theorists have reflected on exile and the identity of movement, and this course will engage considerations of flânerie, Said’s “Exile,” and Anzaldua’s “Borderlands” to explore changing representations of “in-between” selves. We will begin with Henry James’s story of a privileged American woman in Europe, and move through to Viet Thanh Nguyen’s recent collection of stories where characters are forced from their homelands and grapple with an uprooted sense of self. Exploring the constellation of these texts by writers from a variety of backgrounds will, of course, reveal the differences that circumstances of experience have on perceptions of selfhood, but also how the vernacular of loss and estrangement can be traced back to common sources. |

12 | EAP: Popular Contexts | LEV017B05 |
University students often gain considerable language skills, but these are focused on academic language use. That this level of English might also be translated to a non-academic professional context is made explicit in Popular Contexts. This course examines a number of genres of creative writing, teaching students to generate short pieces in each of the genres. In addition, students learn how to work in editorial teams, focusing on giving and receiving effective feedback. Finally, students learn how to consider presenting their work to non-academic parties, with the intent of interesting said parties in the work, thus getting students to think about how they can create text for a non-academic context. |

14 | English as a Lingua Franca | LET029B05 |
As a consequence of post-World War II globalisation, English has become the most widely spoken language in the world. Native speakers are easily outnumbered by non-native speakers, for whom English has become the default option for intercultural communication. At the same time, we see a political and cultural disengagement of the two major Anglophone nations, the United States and the United Kingdom, from the world stage. This necessitates us to review what English is, and what it does.
In this course we take a 'sociology of language' approach to the concept of English. We will engage critically with such notions as standard language and standard language ideology, correctness, the native speaker, varieties of (World) English, and linguistic imperialism. We will look at the influence of the international use of English on the form of the language, and on how the language is taught to language learners.
Additionally, we will develop more widely applicable active research skills by setting up and executing questionnaire-based research into language attitudes in the area of English as a Lingua Franca. |

15 | English Language Variation | LET014B05 |
The English language is not a monolithic and uniform entity, but in fact is extremely varied along a number of dimensions (geographical, social, stylistic, etc.). The variation is not random; rather, it shows what William Labov has called ‘orderly heterogeneity’. The aim of this course is to uncover the order underlying the apparent chaos of linguistic variation and to understand its social and/or linguistic meanings. For this we will read widely in the relevant literature and learn to use the standard tools and software used in variationist linguistics. This course is built around a joint research project and the content will therefore differ significantly from one year to the next. Research projects from previous years include: - analysis of American English (performed) speech of three Australian actors (second-dialect acquisition) - analysis of intra-individual variation in the speech of a single speaker of Scottish Standard English (social and stylistic variation) - analysis of inter-speaker variation in the speech of nine speakers of English from Aruba (social variation) This year, we will investigate the sociophonetics of L2 English with a focus on standard sociolinguistic variables (e.g. age, gender, sexuality). |

17 | English Linguistics: Morphology | LET026B05 |
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the most important theories of morphology and to train them in doing linguistic analyses. After an overview of some basic concepts ("what is a word?"), we will concentrate on current issues in morphology, like morphological productivity ("Though many things are possible in morphology, some are more possible than others" -Aronoff, 1976: 35) and compounding (do we have to assume an underlying verb *to truckdrive for the word truck driver?). In addition, students will be familiarized with research methodology and heuristics, and will also learn more about how word and word formation processes work in the mind. With that an introduction to psycholinguistic processes involved in morphology will also be given. |

23 | King Arthur, Romance, and Empire | LEO009B05 |
More than any other secular variety of premodern writing, romances connect the literature of the Middle Ages with that of both earlier and later periods. They blend classical myth with Celtic mystique, and oriental exotica with local concerns. Romances tell stories about King Arthur and his court, the crusades, and ancient English princes, many of which recur in the works of Shakespeare, Tennyson, or Eliot. In this course we will explore the romance tradition in England, with special attention to the origin and development of the Arthurian canon, the ideological meaning of Englishness and Britishness, the self-examination of courtly ethics and gender relations, and ideological origins of the British Empire. The course will not only examine the aristocratic culture of medieval England, but it will also demonstrate how premodern writings inform the literature of later periods. |

27 | Legacies of the Enlightenment | LEL029B05 |
The “Long” Eighteenth-Century is one of the great transformative periods in Western thought, and we are still living with its legacy: liberal modes of government, economics, history and ethics, empirical science, natural philosophy, and information technology, all have their inception in this extraordinary era, with English literature playing a pivotal part in this transformation. Every literary movement since might be understood as a reaction against, or as a reaffirmation of, Enlightenment values: and everyone living today is inevitably caught up in that ongoing battle of ideas…
The often vicious political satire of Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift speaks to our contemporary era in particular, with its social media. Pioneering experiments in long-form prose-fiction by writers like Tobias Smollett and Henry Fielding produced what remains the dominant literary-form in our own time: the Novel. The dictionaries and catalogues created by figures like Samuel Johnson, William Jones and Erasmus Darwin present many parallels with our own age of information-technology and big data. The political philosophers of the Glorious Revolution, American War of Independence and French Revolution generated the contradictions between Liberalism and Populism that remain unresolved in our own bitterly divided political culture, while activists such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Edmund Burke and Olaudah Equiano presented a template that continues to be vital in efforts to redress injustices of the Enlightenment: #MeToo, Stop the War, Black Lives Matter…
This module will present a survey on the literature of this period in all its variety, from the triumph of Liberalism in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, to the controversies surrounding the French Revolution, and the emergence of the new, Democratic politics of the nineteenth-century. |

35 | Pirates and Poets: Viking Encounters | LEO014B05 |
This course focuses on significant military and cultural encounters between Scandinavian raiders and settlers and the inhabitants of the British Isles during the Viking Age. We will examine a selection of Old English, early Irish, and Old Norse texts that offer different perspectives on Viking culture and its influence in early medieval England and Ireland. Embodying socio-religious alterity, the Vikings were, if not outright feared, viewed with suspicion by their Northwest European neighbours. At the same time, however, they were also known for their achievements in literature and art. |

This is a special module based on a week's full-time study in Stratford-upon-Avon in May 2023. There are two preparatory meetings in February and March, and regular classes in block 4. The module is organized by the Shakespeare Centre in Stratford, and consists of performances of some four plays from the repertory of the Royal Shakespeare Company, lectures about the plays, post-performance discussions, discussions with actors or directors, a back-stage tour of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, and other cultural experiences unique to Stratford. A visit to the Globe theatre in London is included. The module costs approximately €850 (includes travel, bed and breakfast, lectures and theatre tickets). An excellent command of English is necessary. Enquiries and registration: Dr J.P.M. Jansen, j.p.m.jansen@rug.nl The module will only take place if there are enough participants. 40 | Sound Structure | LET011P05 |
This course offers an introduction to the sounds of English, the most basic building blocks of the language. We will look at how sounds are produced in the speaker's mouth, and how we can best describe the differences between sounds. We will focus on the transcription of English sound systems, and will also consider how differences in sounds contribute to differences in meaning. Finally, we look at how sounds combine into syllables, and why some combinations of sounds are allowed in English and others are not. |

41 | Special Topic: Medieval Literature&Cult. | LEO012B05 |
This course allows students to pursue a special topic in premodern literature and culture in depth. In addition to studying a particular theme or topos, students will be exposed to current developments in theoretical approaches to premodern literature.
The special topic for 2022-23 is 'The Personal Voice in the Old English Elegies'. Exile, mutability and death are familiar themes in Old English elegiac verse. We encounter many characters in the poems who express their pain and desperation when faced with the finite nature of human existence. In the course, we shall read various Old English elegies in their original language, paying particular attention to the struggles of these characters, as they try to come to terms with their suffering. |

42 | The Class Struggle in Modern Fiction | LEL016B05 |
Notions of class and class-consciousness are a persistent and seemingly dogged influence on the literary cultures of the British Isles. Sometimes deeply conservative and nostalgic in motivation, sometimes radical and iconoclastic; class is never altogether absent. Setting a literary work in time and place is perhaps no more important than its placement in relation to the dynamics of social strata and power relations. Class also gets easily tangled up in forms of identity politics: in relationships with authority and the State, with education, gender roles, and cultural tastes. This course will consider class as a foundation for the critical analysis of prose fiction from the sweeping social insights of realist novel of the nineteenth-century, to the atomized struggles of the post-modern subject in contemporary fiction. |

43 | The Victorian Age: Progress and Anxiety | LEL020B05 |
The Victorian era remains one of the great periods speaking to today's conception of British culture. From its focus on the realist novel, to its invention of many iconic literary heroes and Gothic villains, Victorian culture occupies a central place of interest in the imagination. Yet it was also a period of social and cultural upheaval and of vehement contrasts. Industrialisation and colonialism brought unimaginable wealth and unimaginable suffering, while scientific pursuits transformed Britain into its modern form even as they displaced many. This course will equip students with an understanding of the Victorian cultural context so that we can both attempt to make sense of the Victorians from a modern perspective, and understand how the Victorians viewed themselves and their imperial project. |

44 | World Literatures in English | LEL019B05 |
This course will scrutinize the English literary canon by examining texts that voice experiences marginalized by histories of colonialism. Students will study works by writers originating from colonies (former and current) in Africa, The Caribbean, North America, The Indian subcontinent, and postcolonial diasporas, and they will contextualize their readings with literary criticism and theory that has sought to understand, resist, and undo exclusionary practices of colonialism. Careful reading of primary texts, including poetry, plays and prose written from the mid-twentieth century to the present will help illuminate the variety of complex social, cultural and political relations that constitute each work, and reveal how each piece engages with and challenges English literary traditions. These texts offer consideration of issues such as cultural heritage, language, politics of ethnicity and identity, nationalism, and the lasting effects of violent colonial histories on the globalized present. |
