Bij dit vak doet de student basale kennis en vaardigheden op over het beroep als (vak)docent. Hij volgt daartoe (online) algemene colleges op het terrein van de pedagogiek en didactiek. Daarnaast neemt de student, onder leiding van de vakdidacticus, deel aan fysieke en/of online bijeenkomsten rond vakdidactiek. De student leert hoe een les te plannen en te evalueren, traint in het geven van deellessen, leert wat het betekent om voor een groep pubers te staan en wat hen motiveert en wat het belang is van een veilig leerklimaat. De student krijgt opdrachten mee die uitgevoerd worden in de onderwijspraktijk (Masterstage 1), leert hoe je gegevens verzamelt over die onderwijspraktijk (observaties, interviews, leerlingvragenlijsten) en hoe je die praktijk vanuit de theorie kunt analyseren. De student oriënteert zich daarmee op alles wat hem tijdens het vervolg van de opleiding te wachten staat en bouwt een realistisch beeld op van zijn geschiktheid voor dat vervolg. |

This is a course in the MSc Finance which focuses on risk analysis and valuation in the energy sector, with an emphasis on mathematical modelling of these risks. Almost all methods that are developed and used in financial market analysis can be used in energy markets as well. However, we concentrate on two general aspects in particular and aim to deepen their understanding. These are real option analysis and energy markets and derivatives. First, real option analysis uses the mathematical methods of derivatives pricing to analyze the value of various types of flexibilities in (real) investment projects. Real option analysis so far has only remotely been touched upon in the finance curriculum and is perfectly suitable to apply in the valuation of energy projects. Secondly, we delve into energy risk management as, in energy markets, many risks are related to underlying cost structures and the characteristics of volatility of prices. Power prices for instance are related to the price of fuels and to carbon prices. In the course Energy & Finance, we investigate how to assess the exposure of firms to a variety of energy risks regarding both their costs and revenues, and study related risk management and investment strategies. This course is part of the focus area 'Energy'. When you focus your MSc on energy subjects you will be awarded an official acknowledgement on your diploma, improving and broadening your career opportunities in the energy sector. The transition, however, presents faces a number of challenges, such as: (1) social challenges, for example, in terms of social resistance to the change; (2) business challenges, for example, as both emergent green technologies and polluter incumbents look for ways in which to become financially sustainable in the new environment; (3) policy challenges, for example, as governments look for ways in which to incentivise the transition; and (4) marketing challenges, for example, as once niche ideas about sustainability and environmental protection, are mainstreamed. In this course we will explore each of these challenges, we will reflect upon the business opportunities that each creates, and will consider the supporting role of competition and markets. In the process, students will gain knowledge about the challenges and opportunities presented by the transition. |

Ons gedrag levert een belangrijke bijdrage aan milieuproblemen, en omgevingscondities beïnvloeden ons welzijn en gedrag. Hoe kunnen we mensen motiveren om milieuvriendelijk gedrag te vertonen, en hoe beïnvloeden omgevingsfactoren ons welzijn en gedrag? De omgevingspsychologie bestudeert de transactie tussen mensen en hun natuurlijke en gebouwde omgeving. In het eerste deel van de cursus gaan we in op de invloed van de omgeving op het welzijn en gedrag van mensen. Er wordt onder meer besproken hoe omgevingsstressoren (zoals lawaai en stank) en risico's (zoals klimaatverandering) invloed kunnen uitoefenen op het welzijn en het gedrag van mensen. Daarnaast wordt ingegaan op de positieve effecten van natuur voor gezondheid en welzijn. In het tweede deel wordt ingegaan op de invloed van de mens op de kwaliteit van het milieu. We gaan in op factoren die van invloed zijn op milieugedrag en op effectieve en acceptabele manieren om milieuproblemen te verminderen door middel van gedragsverandering. We gaan specifiek in op psychologische aspecten gerelateerd aan energieproblemen, en mogelijkheden om een duurzame energietransitie te stimuleren. Globalization has changed the world and has certainly changed supply chain management. Collaboration and coordination across multiple tiers of manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers located in different countries constitute substantial challenges. Geographical distances, cultural discrepancies, institutional differences, laws and tax issues, among others, add to the complexity of global supply chain management. Additionally, the emergence of sustainability as a competitive priority poses an important additional challenge for the management of supply chains. On the one hand because substantial tensions might exist between sustainability and traditional supply chain targets like costs, delivery, quality, and flexibility. On the other hand, growing concerns about the environment might well lead to another period of drastic changes in many globalized supply chains (e.g. distributed manufacturing). This course aims to enable our students to understand, analyze, and develop strategies to cope with the challenges in designing and managing global supply chains. The course covers the following six main topics: 1. A historical/economical perspective on the emergence, the nature and future of global supply chains 2. In this interactive course, students will become familiar with how different disciplines study environmental problems, and their main contributions. Global population growth stimulates pressures of humanity to use marine resources in the deep seas, coastal areas and delta’s. Marine resources that are exploited or have the potential to be exploited are called ecosystem services. Simultaneously, global change processes impose threats to the ecosystems that provide these valuable services. This course provides fundamental knowledge and understanding of i) the concept of ecosystem services, ii) which services are provided by different marine ecosystems and how do these relate to ecosystem functions, iii) mechanisms behind the main anthropogenic and global change stressors that threaten ecosystem functions/services, iv) opportunities to benefit from ecosystem services under conditions of global change. Students will acquire practical skills in studying global change processes and quantifying ecosystem services. Students will develop a critical reflective attitude on how to deal with coastal management for example in balancing preserving and unlocking ecosystem functions and services and determining climate related and non-climate related drivers.

´Without consumption - at least at the basic level of air, water, food, and shelter - life ceases´ (Mick et al. 2012, p3). Consumption is a critical determinant of consumer well-being. Marketing plays an essential and central role in fulfilling the needs and wants that drive their consumption behavior. Yet, in many western societies consumption levels have increased to an extent that they actually are deteriorating societal and consumer well-being. The growing demand for and consumption of goods and services has serious societal and personal implications; for example, the overconsumption of energy contributes to environmental pollution and global warming, while the overconsumption of food and the resulting obesity epidemic contributes to a dramatic increase in the cost of health care, while reducing economic productivity world-wide. In response to the negative implications of the (over)consumption of goods and services, a growing number of firms experience an increasing pressure to improve their business practices to help address these negative implications. This course will focus on the most recent insights pertaining the challenges and opportunities associated with transforming business to contribute to societal and consumer well-being. To accomplish this, this course uniquely merges marketing theory and consumer psychology. The course takes a business-to-consumer perspective. Specific attention will be paid to sustainability (incl. energy, animal well-being, labor conditions) and personal health and healthy lifestyles. The group assignment of this course consists of designing a project or intervention to increase consumer well-being, pitching it to the target audience, collecting field data to assess the effect of the intervention, and preparing a report about it. The project should be related to topics covered in this course, i.e. either the field of health or sustainability/energy transition, and can be a website around a certain topic, a mobile application or another type of intervention targeted at consumers to make them change their behaviour. Bij Masterstage 1 loopt de student stage op een school voor voortgezet onderwijs (in de regel twee dagen per week) onder begeleiding van een vakcoach. Hij verricht observaties, interviewt leerlingen, bereidt (deel)lessen voor, geeft ze en bespreekt ze na met de vakcoach. De student verzamelt informatie en feedback over de kwaliteit van het eigen handelen (o.a. door de afname van een leerlingenquête), rapporteert daarover en beschrijft zijn ervaringen in een stageverslag. De student oriënteert zich daarmee op het leraarschap en leert hoe je in de context van de school onderzoekend kunt werken aan het sturen van je ontwikkeling. The course is based on a series of lectures (22) and a reading assignment. Lectures will be given by internal (ESRIG, Arctic Centre) as well as external polar experts. Topics covered are polar climatology, marine and terrestrial polar habitats, key species, effects of climate change from species to ecosystem level, and other human impacts. The second part of the course consists of a reading assignment, followed by presentations. A set of key scientific papers will be handed out to small groups of students (max 3 per group), covering as much scientific disciplines as possible. The students will need to understand, reproduce, summarize, evaluate and discuss the result and implications of the papers during a symposium, where the reading assignments will be presented. The course will be evaluated by a written examination, passing this exam is mandatory. Examination material includes material from the lectures as well as a selection of key scientific papers. |

The central theme of the course is: how do energy markets, in particular electricity and gas markets, function and how can this be improved by governments (regulators). The functioning of energy markets differs from many other sectors because of the economies of scale of the networks, resulting in natural monopolies, the importance of network balance, the societal objective to radically change the nature of the energy industry (i.e. energy transition: renewables, hydrogen, electrification) and the fact that energy is a basic commodity which is needed by everyone. Topics to be discussed are among others: how to determine the tariffs that an operator of an electricity or gas network is allowed to charge on users of the infrastructure? How to implement competition in the energy industry, both on wholesale level and retail level? To what extent need the energy markets be changed because of the energy transition in which fossil technologies are replaced by renewable sources (as wind and solar)? How to give incentives to energy producers and consumers to reduce carbon emissions? Knowledge of economics of regulating market is useful for positions within regulated companies (TenneT, Gasunie, etc.), companies using regulated infrastructures (in particular large energy users), governments (national, EU), regulatory bodies (ACM, ACER, etc.) and consultancies (PWC, Oxera, etc.). The course not only deals with the economic theory behind the regulation of markets, but also applies this theory to real-life problems in energy markets. The course consists of lectures and tutorials every week. The course starts by discussing the question why energy markets need regulation. Then, we discuss how the government could regulate these markets. These first meetings are meant to give the students some theoretical background in economic regulation. Afterwards, we discuss key issues in the daily practice of regulation: benchmarking on efficiency and the determination of the the appropriate reward (i.e. the WACC) on capital which is invested in the network. These questions are highly important for regulated firms as it affects how much profit they are allowed to make and to which extent they are able to finance the investments. Then, we go into in the question how to implement competition in energy markets. We discuss the design of electricity and gas markets on wholesale level and how these markets become more integrated on an international level. We also pay attention to how environmental regulation (like emissions trading and subsidies for renewables) can be designed and how this affects the electricity sector/market. We also pay attention to the retail energy market and consumer behaviour, discussing how competition can be implemented in markets where the demand is affected by factors like (perceived) switching costs and trust in retailers. In most weeks, there will be assignments, which are discussed in the tutorials based on presentations by students. In addition, there will be a few extra tutorials where we recap the material and discuss questions of students. At the end there will be a meeting to discuss the mock exam. The course discusses recent changes in the field of environmental planning related to the emergence of sustainable development as a prime governance guideline. The course explains how sustainable development challenges the reliance on reactive and regulatory based policies that have long been common in environmental planning in many countries. Sustainable development is presented as a call for more proactive policies that integrate environmental concerns in overall governance activities. These calls for governance renewal are connected to wider shifts in both planning theory and practice, away from command and control policies towards a richer variety of policy approaches, inspired by for example market processes, public and private partnerships, communicative rationality, transition management and multi-level governance. While discussing recent changes in environmental planning, students are invited and stimulated to develop a critical and constructive attitude, while drawing on a ‘post-contingency’ perspective for identifying various theoretical arguments supporting and doubts regarding these changes. Students will subsequently be shown examples of changes in environmental planning, related to five dominant environmental issues: urban development, nature and biodiversity, climate change, air pollution and energy. Students will be invited during a written essay exam to critically discuss and reflect on recent changes in environmental planning. Finally, through assignments, students need to show their ability to make theoretically supported and well-argued choices between different planning strategies and measures when faced with different issues and circumstances. |

Social Impact Assessment (SIA) can be simply defined as the processes of managing the social issues of projects. To some extent, SIA is the social equivalent of environmental impact assessment (EIA) and is part of the impact assessment family (which also includes Strategic Environmental Assessment, Biodiversity Impact Assessment, Health Impact Assessment, Human Rights Impact Assessment, Technology Assessment), but over time SIA has developed to be mostly about the management systems used to address social issues (at multiple levels) rather than just being a regulatory tool to determine whether project approval should be given. Sometimes, it is called ‘Social Performance’. SIA does work with regulatory agencies to contribute to decision-making and approval processes; however SIA also works with the proponent of a development plan to improve projects through project (re)design, site selection, and design and implementation of mitigation measures and monitoring programs. In addition, SIA works with project financiers (especially international financial institutions) to determine social risks and whether project financing should be approved. Finally, SIA works with NGOs to ensure projects meet international standards; and SIA works with impacted communities to assist in coping with change and planning for positive futures. SIA is best conceived as a discourse or paradigm about the management of the social issues of projects, and as being much more than the technocratic or bureaucratic procedure EIA is. This course enables students to learn about the important role SIA can play in assisting in the better implementation of planned interventions (projects, plans, policies, programmes). Upon completion of the course, students will have an increased awareness of the social impacts of spatial interventions and will be able to put this learning into practice. |

Due to continuous urbanisation and the increasing impacts of climate change, flood risks in delta areas are increasing, and, as a consequence, water management is high on the international political and societal agenda. Worldwide, the need is recognized to develop strategies and measures to adapt land use to the already occurring effects of climate change, and to develop integrated and adaptive approaches for dealing with water issues in low-lying urban deltas. The development and implementation of these integrated and adaptive approaches is however not an easy task, as they often involve a substantive and/or governance transition in water management. Drawing on a theoretical exploration of the nature of water transitions (including the notions of flood resilience and adaptability in both planning and design), and the way in which transitions can be managed, the course focuses on identifying current transitions in water management in relation to climate change, and on discussing issues and dilemmas in the attempts to manage these water transitions in establishing resilient delta areas. Through a group assignment, students will develop the capacity to suggest practical strategies and possibilities for water transition management for specific planning situations. |

This module is structured as follows:
1. Preparation work placement (at university, 2 weeks, end of December) 2. Work placement part 1, including Writing Plan of Action (at company or organization, 8 weeks) 3. Midterm week (at university, 1 week) 4. Work placement part 2 (at company or organization, 3 months) 5. Conference (at university, 1 week in july)
During the work placement outside the university the student acts as science advisor, who analyses a business or policy problem that needs scientific knowledge to solve it. The student then writes a report with well-argued suggestions to solve the problem. The student implements the skills he/she has learned in the modules Science and Business and Science and Policy. The student gets acquainted with the organization (structure, culture, personality) by performing tasks within the organization. Thus the student gets valuable experience in a multidisciplinary environment.
The work placement starts in January and ends in July. The student must find a work placement by himself, with help of the SBP-staff. This is prepared during the SBP courses. The work placement should have a (beta) science aspect (25-50%) that is on master level and matches the program of the student, a business and/or policy aspect (25-50%) and sufficient prospects for implementation of the advice. Subgrades need to be 5,5 or higher for a pass |
