Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. identify and explain the ingredients and concepts that enter advanced mathematical physics calculations; 2. perform concrete calculations by using advanced exact methods and various approximation schemes that are necessary for research in physics and related fields; 3. use the various methods and concepts to solve problems partly drawn from physics research; 4. justify the use and judge the applicability of the various methods.

Omschrijving The course addresses advanced topics in mathematical physics that connect to physics research. During the course students have to hand in their solutions of moreorless advanced problems, which are to be solved after the corresponding lectures, tutorials and additional selfstudy of the pertinent topics. Topics to be covered include aspects of complex analysis, in particular integration and the steepest descent method, asymptotic expansions, various integral transforms, distributions and Green's functions, calculus of variations, and special functions. The level of mathematical rigor will reflect the practice in physics. The students have to solve problems that are partly drawn from physics research.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from the standard physics and mathematics courses of the Bachelor Physics curriculum. The course unit is compulsory for the Master Physics (specializations Advanced Materials and Quantum Universe) and is an elective in the Master Applied Physics and the Master Astronomy.

Opmerkingen The grade determines whether the course is passed (grade 5.5 or higher). This course was registered last year with course code NAMM12
