Leerdoelen | At the end of the course: - students will have a good understanding of what the field of cognitive engineering entails - students will have a good understanding of what cognitive psychology, cognitive science, and human factors contribute to cognitive engineering - students will have a good understanding of how cognitive engineering integrates these fields of study, and what its unique contribution is in the design of technological systems - students will know how to apply cognitive engineering to the design of technological systems to enable optimal cooperation between humans and machines |

Omschrijving | Cognitive engineering is an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis, modeling, and design of engineered systems or workplaces in which humans and technologies jointly operate to achieve system goals (Lee & Kirlik, 2013). In this module, knowledge from human information processing research, cognitive psychology, cognitive science including cognitive modelling, and human factors is combined and integrated to show how this can be used in the design of technological systems. Cognitive Engineering methods will be discussed as well, such as informal and formal task and work analysis, user, process and performance modeling, simulation, design of tasks, jobs and interfaces for health, safety, comfort and fun, human-computer interaction, and evaluation. The course consists of sessions in which students present on a theme they choose themselves. Students will also write a paper on that theme, where emphasis will be on integration across the various fields of study or different methods and approaches, rather than on an in-depth analysis or discussion of a single method or theoretical approach. |
