Leerdoelen  At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. reproduce the essential factual knowledgebase concerning subatomic physics and the fundamental forces; 2. describe the macroscopic and the subatomic world using quantum mechanical concepts; 3. explain central concepts in subatomic physics, such as symmetries and conservation laws, scattering cross section and form factor, the relation between mass excess and instability of nuclei, interactions of particles with matter, and quantum oscillations; 4. apply concepts and models, such as the Standard Model in Particle Physics, the CKM mechanism, the quark model, the liquid drop model etc., for calculations and for solving problems related to subatomic physics; 5. place phenomena and practical problems within the context of the Standard Model in Particle Physics. Solve practical problems from within the provided subatomic physics framework. 

Omschrijving  The objective of the course is to give the student a broad introduction into the physics of systems smaller than the atom with an emphasis on elementary particles, both from an experimental and theoretical perspective. Topics that will be covered are the elementary fermions, the interactions between them and the resulting phenomenology and basic concepts of hadronic and nuclear physics. Concepts are introduced following their historical development and placed in their modern context. In addition, outstanding issues in the field are discussed.
