• to explain the various concepts and theories on environment and development;
• to relate critically between concepts and theories of development and environment, versus their practical applicability;
• to review theories and themes related to environmental and development challenges.

The module caters for Bachelor's students and regular students from all faculties. The module is part of the Development Studies Minor. It also fits within study programmes with a focus on environmental issues and natural resource studies.
Omschrijving This course studies the relation between environment and development in developing (and developed) countries. The focus is on a natural science approach linked to societal issues, such as poverty, population, migration, and a weak institutional and political structure. Possible strategies for environmental improvement are reviewed using case-studies from different countries and sectors. The causes of environmental problems are analyzed on the local, national and international level.
The following issues will be touched upon: the depletion of natural resources; energy; climate change; land use and food; water use.
Each week is organized around one particular theoretical or thematic topic of environment and development.
The course consists of lectures and group assignments. During class key concepts and theories related to the topic will be explained.

There will be 2 hrs of lectures weekly.
In the academic year 2021-2022 these lectures will still be online due to the corona crisis.
Next to the lectures there will be weekly group assignments!
These group assignments are not obligatory, but without assignments your final grade is only 80% of the result of the written exam. So the assignments are 20% of your final score.
During the first lecture is discussed how this and the formation of groups functions.
