Leerdoelen After having followed this course, the student knows how to…
• Discuss and critically reflect on the operationalisation of psychological constructs (such as attitudes, power, emotion, motivation etc.)
• Describe, compare, apply and evaluate the use of these operationalisations
• Describe, compare, apply and evaluate different research designs (correlational, experimental, longitudinal)
• Decide upon a research design to link a research question to a specific method
• Reflect on the conceptual and practical consequences of imperfections in research data (for example excluding outliers, excluding specific items from a scale, dealing with inconclusive manipulation check data, which control variables to add in an analysis of correlational data etc.).
Omschrijving In this course, students will get to know research methods and designs that are frequently used in Social and Organizational Psychology. We will touch upon paradigms from various fields of research, such as intergroup relations, leadership, power, emotion, motivation, stress, environmental attitudes, teamwork.
The aim is to simulate running through all phases of research: generating a research question based on theories and/or relevant applied questions; operationalising the concepts and designing a study to address the research question; and data analysis.
The course is a combination of lectures and small group discussions. The lectures will cover the measurement of psychological constructs, different research designs and associated statistical analysis, and a discussion of good research practices. Students will then work with this content in a few small group discussions in which they need to come up with and defend their own operationalizations and research designs.
Knowledge of the lectures and course literature will be evaluated with an exam with multiple choice questions (40% of the final grade). As final assignment (60% of final grade), students will develop an own research question, operationalize the relevant concepts, choose an appropriate sample, design and statistical analysis, and write this up as a study proposal. Students receive feedback on their study proposal for the final assignment based on (1) a presentation in which they present their study to students and teachers, and (2) a draft version of the final assignment.
