Leerdoelen After the course, you will…
…have an in-depth insight into relevant theories and (recent) empirical evidence within selected topics in environmental psychology.
…be able to critically assess existing knowledge, connect theories, and identify contradictions and knowledge gaps.
…be able to come up with your own reasoning to sort out contradictions and close knowledge gaps, integrating existing literature and different (possibly conflicting) findings.
…be able to communicate knowledge and critical reflection in a well-argued and constructive way.
Omschrijving In this course, you will study in depth and critically think about selected topics in environmental psychology, such as the so-called spillover effects of environmental behaviour, nature and well-being, public acceptability of environmental policies, and nudging strategies to promote pro-environmental behaviour.
You will analyse theoretical contradictions and explore conflicting findings that surround these topics. For example, if a person undertook one pro-environmental action (e.g. recycling), is that person more or less likely to undertake another pro-environmental action (e.g. eating less meat)? Some theories suggest Yes (i.e., positive spillover) and some suggest No (i.e., negative spillover), and there is empirical evidence for both. How to reconcile these different theories and how to explain the findings? You will develop your own theoretical explanation for a selected contradiction in environmental psychology, which you will write in an essay.
Besides, in a group with other students, you will review a recent scientific article on one of the key topics in environmental psychology. You will learn how to write a good review, pointing out to the strengths and weaknesses of the article and making constructive advice how to advance the paper. You will present your review in class and discuss with others.
The course is highly interactive and there is a lot of group discussion. The course includes lectures on cutting-edge research on key topics in environmental psychology, given by researchers active in the field. You will discuss in class how this research helps solving prominent questions in environmental psychology, and which key questions remain.
Upon completing the course, you will have become an expert in your selected topic in environmental psychology, with your own perspective on the problem. Furthermore, you will have gained in-depth insights into other important topics through attending the guest lectures, reviewing scientific articles, and discussing with other students.
