Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) describe how global methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, transcriptional noise, RNA processing aberrations, impaired DNA repair, and chromosomal instability are implicated in ageing
2) define how the proteasome, lysosome, autophagy, and chaperones systems impact protein (re)folding and aggregation in ageing
3) explain the role of stem cells in ageing. The students should be able to summarize the changes stem cell undergo with age and the consequences of the stem cell exhaustion for the human organism
4) summarize how mitochondrial dysfunction, the growth hormone signaling pathways, the IGF-1 signaling pathway and dietary restriction are implicated in ageing
5) describe the mechanism of cellular senescence and discuss the biological pathways implicated in senescence
6) review approaches and model system used for studying ageing and illustrate these with examples
7) describe the syndromes of premature ageing in particular HGPS
8) discuss ageing process in the light of evolution and illustrate it with examples & debate the promises and limitations of ageing research for the development of interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives
9) describe the materials of scientific lecture in their own words and to distinguish between key and secondary aspects. Additionally the students should be able to formulate the questions about the lectures & outline the main ideas and criticize possible limitations of a scientific article and defend its strengths
10) compose an assay on a research question that connects multiple hallmarks of ageing. argue and defend their own opinion on the topic. The students should be able to evaluate scientific assays.
Omschrijving Ageing can be defined as the gradual loss of the ability of the organism to maintain homeostasis. In this course we focus on the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which tissue and organ function deteriorate and homeostasis fails, resulting in ageing and age related disease. We will evaluate to what extent the up-to date knowledge on the molecular biology provides opportunities for possible interventions also in the context of evolutionary theories of ageing. We present the model systems and experimental strategies that are used in ageing research. This course will be supported by a team of specialists in different fields of ageing that will provide lectures and reading material. The course will be further supported by materials from an online course "Why do we age? The molecular mechanisms of ageing". The course not only gives an overview of the research field of ageing but also teaches scientific writing, active listening and giving feedback to peers.
