Omschrijving This core module will focus on issues of democracy and authoritarianism. While countries’ regime
type might appear to be a domestic issue at first sight; the establishment, legitimation, and
overthrowing of regimes cannot be seen in isolation from the international context. This course
therefore aims to prepare students for a thesis on topics such as democratic backsliding and
illiberalism, contemporary authoritarianism, democracy promotion as well as autocracy promotion,
the premises of the so-called ‘liberal world order’ and normative challenges to this order, regime
learning, and (colour) revolutions. These processes can furthermore be studied in light of broader
dynamics, for instance Europeanisation, post-socialism, post-colonialism, or changing global power
dynamics. Particular attention will therefore also be paid to the role of governments, international
actors, political opposition, and civil society actors.
