Leerdoelen The learning outcomes (on an intermediate level) of this course unit are the following:

1. Display knowledge about topic of the core module.
2. Develop a research outline on topic of the core module with a clearly formulated problem definition, using one or more International Relations theories, models and/or approaches, and one or more methods and techniques suitable for the field concerned.
3. Evaluate research in a critical and substantiated manner, as well as in a way that respects scientific, social and ethical responsibilities.
4. Express himself/herself in a clear and coherent manner, both in oral and in written/typed form, using understandable and correct English and/or Dutch.
5. Become self-reliant and reliable in the execution of the tasks belonging to this course unit.
Omschrijving This core module focuses on the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to analyse European decision-making and its political-juridical and social effects on the member-states of the European Union. Hereto we study the realization of European policies as a product of interaction between member-states, EU institutions and other actors, with special attention for the role of interest groups in this process, as well as the transposition of European rules in national legislation and rule-making. Theory and empiricism are thus directed towards the analysis of Europeanization processes, both in public governance of the EU member-states and ‘in a broader sense’ in their societies. How are particular member states responding to pressures of European integration? Are states and societies able (and willing) to cope with discontents of a European institutional order (the economic crisis, cultural diversity, etc.) To what extent can the existing discontents and conflicts in contemporary Europe be viewed as a catharsis for transformation and construction of a more resilient European project?

Entreevoorwaarden Students must have obtained the propaedeutic certificate. In the second year of the Bachelor, 10 ECTS must have been obtained in non-language modules, as well as TIR and MRP.
Opmerkingen The enrolment procedure for the Core Module is a two-step procedure. If you are planning to participate in a Core Module (and BA Thesis), you should enrol as follows:
1) In the progress enrollment period you should enrol for the general Core Module course (LYX138B10) and Bachelor Thesis (LYX999B10) in Progress.
2) In the seminar enrollment period you should enrol for a specific Core Module topic via the general Core Module nestor course page (similar to a seminar group enrolment). You will be placed for the group you enrol for. There are a limited number of places, so make sure to register early!
For this course attendance is mandatory.
