Omschrijving The COVID-19 pandemic raises profound issues for the relevance and remit of International Relations. Responses to the global pandemic have foregrounded the importance of state and sub-national responses while backgrounding international ones. International Organizations, like the World Health Organization, have remained embroiled in controversies. The United Nations Security Council has been accused of ‘missing in action’. Informal global governance bodies like the Group of 7 and the Group of 20 have been critiqued for ‘coming up short’. The lack of international coordination has left national health services scrambling and competing against one another to procure the necessary Personal Protective Equipment, ventilators and vaccines. National and sub-national authorities appear to have led responses to the global pandemic. How can the (inter-)discipline of International Relations help to make sense of a pandemic-stricken world of growing nationalism?

In exploring this overarching question, Capita IRIO draws together debates in and across IR emerging in the 2020s. Students will begin by debating whether new and existing niches within IR enable or disable the (inter-)discipline from generating useful insights into the global pandemic. The course will then engage a range of perspectives on the pandemic emerging across the five other tracks of the IRIO Master’s programme. Students will assess how the shocks of COVID- are being assessed in International Political Economy, International Security, Geopolitics & Connectivity, European Politics in a Global Perspective and East Asian Studies. Students will become acquainted with theories, methodologies and debates across the five tracks of the programme. They will also be able to consider paths forward, including in their own research papers and theses. The course will, in conclusion, consider further directions for the study of international relations and international organization. Scholarship on the pandemic and its international repercussions will be situated within reconsiderations of the theoretical foundations and blind spot of the (inter-)discipline.
