Omschrijving This RS will discuss key issues regarding the extractive industries and how these relate to both domestic and international politics. With many countries in the Global South immensely rich in natural resources - an astonished Belgian geologist prospecting the Belgian Congo famously dubbed it “a geological scandal”- yet with many of these countries also struggling to bring basic services to its citizens and throughout its territory, it is clear that natural resource abundance does not automatically equate with great prosperity. In this RS, we will examine the relation of natural resources with processes of economic and political development, conflict, and contestation. Students will learn to research and critically reflect on key topics such as the so-called resource curse, the links between natural resources and armed conflict, and be able to historically situate the contemporary global mining industry in processes of imperialism and colonialism.
Core course readings will focus on the experiences of countries and people in sub-Saharan Africa, with additional geographical areas included as per student interests. Student research papers have no geographical restrictions.
Although for example large-scale agricultural projects can be viewed in the same light, this RS will focus on on the oil, gas, and mining sectors.
