Leerdoelen | At the end of this course students will have learned... - to understand what emotions are and how we categorize them - to analyze how films evoke emotions and how viewers experience them - relate theories from outside film studies (such as philosophy, psychology or empirical aesthetics) to films - set up a research project of a particular dimension that investigates the topic of film and emotion - to execute, with a high level of English proficiency, a final written essay. |

Omschrijving | This 7-week seminar introduces students to the topic of film and emotion and thus a significant recent field of research on film reception and aesthetics. It presents students with some of the crucial research questions of this burgeoning field in film studies: - What is an emotion and how can we distinguish it from related concepts like moods, atmospheres or existential feelings? - How do we categorize cinematic emotions? - How do films manage to elicit emotions and through what aesthetic strategies? - How do viewers experience emotions like fear, disgust, boredom or being moved? - And: Why do viewers enjoy negative emotions in the cinema, emotions they would try to avoid in real life? We will be reading texts by leading scholars on film and emotions such as Carl Plantinga, Murray Smith, Robert Sinnerbrink, Steffen Hven, Richard Misek, Julian Hanich and others. The seminar will likely also include a series of film screenings. They are a mandatory part of the course. |
