Uitgebreide vaknaam Performance Mediality & Materiality: Theatre after the Performative Turn
Leerdoelen Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to:
1. demonstrate a clear understanding of contemporary theatre and performance theories.
2. show a good understanding of the dialogues between theatre/performance theory and larger theoretical discourses.
3. develop a critical response to the theoretical and methodological approaches to theatre, performance, and performativity.
4. show general knowledge of the history of theatre and performance art in the late 20th and 21st centuries as well as their reception, and in relation to the development of audiovisual media technologies.
5. show knowledge of the history of thought on theatre and explore uses of theatre and performance to rethink cultural domains and academic disciplines.
Omschrijving The course engages students with the key theories of theatre and performance studies alongside ideas of performance and performativity developed in the related academic disciplines of anthropology and gender studies. The course takes as a point of departure the Performative Turn, a paradigm shift in the humanities and social sciences, marked by the use of performance to examine artistic expression and to illustrate social behaviour and cultural structures. We will draw links between the idea of performative aesthetics and the expansion of the semantic boundaries of performance to include public events and demonstrative forms of activism, such as street protests, sit-ins, or acts of self-harm. The exploration of the performance medium will address the relationship between liveness and mediatisation and the impact of new media environments on the experience of live performance. As part of this course, students are invited to interrogate the theoretical conceptualisations of artistic performances as transformative acts, reflecting on the radical potential but also the limitations of theatrical events and theatricalised forms of social and political action.
