This course looks at recent transformations in the audiovisual arts. In particular, we examine the critical role that film, music, theatre, and video play in our increasingly interactive and global arts environment. In order to explore these transformations, the course is divided into two parts; the first providing important historical and theoretical foundation and the second delving more deeply into specific cases. The first half, Intro to Auviovisual Arts A, introduces important core concepts that the arts have in common, such as genres, artists, stars, producers, directors, and audiences. In the second half of this course, Intro to Audiovisual Arts B, we zoom in on areas where film, theatre, and sound interact. Here we will look at the difference between sound and silent film, the film musical, musical theatre, performance art, the movie soundtrack, and the idea of film as music. Further, we investigate a number of case studies in which film, theatre, and music merge. Specifically, we will deal with forms of audiovisual moving-image such as the music video, interactive film and new media, as well as the role of sampling in sonic culture. Additionally, this course provides basic introduction to important concepts of audiovisual arts theory by well-known scholars Claudia Gorbman, Michel Chion, Rick Altman, Aram Sinnreich, André Bazin, Noël Carroll, and Lev Manovich, to name but a few. Ultimately, students gain the ability to compare and contrast various media with reference to important cases from recent decades in order to identify their creative, cultural, and aesthetic value. |
