Leerdoelen Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able
1. to relate theories in different subfields of linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonology and phonetics, language processing and language acquisition) to acquired communication disorders.
2. to relate theory / analysis and empiricism in the field of acquired communication disorders.
the methods and techniques with which research in the field of developmental communication disorders is conducted.
3. to understand and compare multiple views on a certain neurolinguistic phenomenon.
4. to demonstrate insight into the nature and function of scientific practice in the linguistic field, and into the coherence of the various subareas (in particular neurolinguistics in relation to theoretical linguistics).
5. to report orally and in writing on ideas and research in the field of neurolinguistics, particularly in a multidisciplinary setting.
Omschrijving This course is intended to familiarize students with current instruments used in clinical assessment and in research in the field of language development disorders and dyslexia. The students are introduced to the background and structure of test instruments, but also get hands on experience, and learn to evaluate the quality and diagnostic accuracy of diagnostic tests.
Special attention goes to the different language profiles of children with language disorders (for example, disorders of specific aspects of language like phonology, lexical-semantics, syntax, pragmatics, in comprehension and/or expression). The most commonly used language tests for children with a suspicion of a language disorder are discussed. The students learn about the main the main approaches used for testing each of these aspects and how to interpret the results in function of an action-oriented approach (for example for the preparation of a customized treatment plan).
