Language, Brain and Cognition |
Leerdoelen |
After successful completion of this course, students will have a thorough knowledge of EEG and/or eyetracking approaches to psycholinguistics. They will be able to formulate an academic problem in the field of psycholinguistic research with EEG and/or eyetracking independently. That is, they will be able to select, apply and where necessary adapt an adequate theoretical framework and the above mentioned techniques to make an original contribution to our understanding of language and the brain. Also, they will be able to independently formulate a research proposal that makes use of these techniques.
In addition, they will be able to make use of the research results of others, to evaluate these, and to critically make connections between their own specialist knowledge of linguistic and psycholinguistic theories, as well as theories of cognition. They will gain experience in working with other students and lecturers on an academic project , prepare for participation in the international academic debate in the chosen area of specialization, and practice presenting an academic problem convincingly in English, both orally and in writing.
Furthermore, successful completion of the course will provide them with skills necessary to keep abreast of the latest developments in psycholinguistics and broaden and deepen their own knowledge and understanding. Also, they will practice to reflect on the implications of their work for the development of linguistic theories. |
Omschrijving |
This course will introduce students to theories on the relationship between language and the brain, as well as two major research methods that are applied in this field of research (EEG and eye tracking). The course will consist of a series of lectures on cognition (focusing on attention, working memory and executive functions), lectures and demos on methodology (EEG and eyetracking), as well as presentations and group activities by the students themselves, with each student expected to acquire (and share) in-depth knowledge of two theoretical topics. |
