Omschrijving Spanish literary history and culture are marked by a special interest in marginals and discrimination, such as the poor, immigrants, criminals, the mentally ill. The picaresque novel – a literary genre centred on the narration of criminal lives from the criminal’s perspective – for example, arose during the turbulent times of the Spanish Golden Age. The present day penchant of this genre is the novela negra, which provides elaborate representations of life on the margins in the post Franco era. In the following course, students will analyze the literary and cultural representation of marginality. They will study the discussion of sexual orientation, the place of women in a masculine culture, and the alternative perspectives on society by illegal immigrants, criminals and drug addicts. Moreover, we shall study the theoretical possibility of giving a voice to the oppressed by way of literary and cultural representation. In doing so, students will build forth on the background knowledge acquired in the BA, and develop the skills required for the elaboration of a substantial work of academic research in the MA thesis.
