Omschrijving | Our knowledge of Ancient Greek religion is for an important part based on written sources, though Ancient Greek polytheism did not have a single, sacred text, such as the Bible or Koran. In this interdisciplinary course, we will investigate ways in which writing was essential to Greek religion, study the ways in which language functions in religious writing and what these texts can tell us about the religious and socio-political contexts in which they originated. We will study textual evidence, ranging from literary sources to inscriptions, from a variety of perspectives. This evidence includes i.a. hymns, religious decrees, oracles, magical texts, and theatre plays. The issues to be explored will include (in no particular order): speech acts and performativity of texts; the interplay between customs, laws and normativity; religious authority; questions of orality and literacy; divine anthropomorphism; writing as ritual; scripting and performance. The course forms part of the curriculum of the MA Classics, and Ancient History and the ReMa CMEMS, but will also be of special interest to students from other disciplines (e.g. history, archaeology, religious studies, linguistics, humanities in general). Knowledge of Ancient Greek and Latin is not required. |
