Leerdoelen | After successful completion of this course students: 1) Have a profound knowledge of the CEFR in international as well as in the Dutch context with a focus on their target language community; 2) Can define and describe different approaches to CEFR-based teaching and assessment, appreciate their potential and shortcomings, and evaluate the empirical evidence supporting them; 3) Can apply theoretical insights about the CEFR to evaluate existing teaching and assessment materials; 4) Can develop teaching and assessment tasks incorporating theoretical insights as well as practical implications leading from them based on the CEFR; 5) Can prepare and create a theoretically informed podcast about a relevant topic related to the didactic implications of the CEFR The course has three main aims: (1) to deepen students' understanding about the CEFR in its international and Dutch context; (2) to raise students’ awareness of their own language competences in relation to the CEFR; (3) to acquaint themselves with, and learn how to employ the principles and practices of responsible CEFR-based language teaching and assessment. |

Omschrijving | Students are introduced to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR/ Dutch ERK), which has become the standard for language learning, teaching and assessment in the Netherlands, throughout Europe and in many places around the world. The course will provide a profound theoretical basis explaining the linguistic but also the societal and political impact the CEFR has had. By more practically oriented work, they will be guided to evaluate oral and written language samples of others as well as themselves, increasing their awareness about their own proficiency while at the same time training them to use the CEFR for competence evaluation. In addition, they will be taught how to critically evaluate existing learning, teaching and assessment practices and material, in particular, focusing on its alignment with CEFR levels and how these may be used to support language learners’ endeavor to reach higher levels of language proficiency and linguistic competence (i.e., to guide language learning and development). Finally, students will learn how to critically read, review and discuss current research into CEFR-based learning, teaching and assessment. During the course, students will work on weekly tasks (individual, pair and group) which they will collect in a portfolio (pass/fail based on 80% completion). The final task will be a podcast, which they will create in pairs/groups with a focus on their target language (60% of the mark). The podcast will be accompanied by a theoretically informed rationale for their choices (40% of the mark). EduMA students will work in the target language of their studies and throughout the course, we will adopt a multilingual translanguaging approach. Students are expected to have a PAPER COPY of the Companion Volume in their target language. Either order it in time or print it from https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/level-descriptions |
