Leerdoelen Competencies to be developed. After successful completion of this course students:
1) Have a firm grasp of the most important second language pedagogy theoretical constructs,
2) Can define and describe different approaches to L2 teaching, appreciate their potential and shortcomings, and evaluate the empirical evidence supporting them.
3) Can apply theoretical teaching insights to evaluate existing teaching materials,
4) Can develop teaching material, incorporating theoretical insights as well as practical implications leading from them,
5) Can write a theoretical rationale for their didactic choices,
6) Have, ideally, practised teaching one lesson based on their own material to evaluate the course design,
7) Can create and/or critically evaluate language assessment material.

Course objectives:
The course has two main aims: (1) to deepen students' understanding of the relationship between research and designing language teaching materials, (2) to give students first-hand experience in ´translating´ theoretical insights in teaching and learning to designing an actual L2 lesson and (3) to acquaint themselves with, and learn to employ the principles and practices of responsible language testing
Omschrijving Students become acquainted with the most recent and influential theoretical insights into second language pedagogy, but also get some hands-on experience designing a second language course themselves. As such, the course is split into two parts. Each week of the first block sees a different theoretical construct within second language pedagogy being tackled. Topics range from individual differences in the language classroom to implicit versus explicit exposure and learning through to input versus output. During the interactive lecture of each week, a theoretical construct is introduced. Its practical implications are then discussed in the subsequent weekly seminar: how does this work in the actual L2 classroom? The initial theoretical part of the course sees weekly theoretical quizzes administered through Nestor (collectively constituting 10% of the final course mark) and ends with an individually written research paper that accounts for 40% of the final course mark.
The second block of the course involves creatively implementing, experiencing, and critically evaluating different approaches to second language teaching and assessment. This is accomplished through students having to develop their own teaching material, often alongside experienced teachers. If possible, students will teach their lesson to test whether the course materials they developed can be used in the actual classroom. Their finished product (of which one lesson is presented during the final course symposium) makes up 40% of the final course mark. The final 10% of the final course mark is reserved for a presentation about the developed material.
