Leerdoelen | After successful completion of this course, students are able to 1.describe and critically reflect on the most influential theories of second language acquisition, including the most recent developments in non-linear and Complex Dynamic Systems approaches second language development and to develop new ideas for research in this field (1.1; 1.2; 1.3; 1:5) 2. find relevant sources, combine information from different sources and subdisciplines, and distil relevant problems and questions for second-language acquisition from this information (2.1) 3. initiate, conduct, and analyse, small-scale (empirical) studies in the field of Applied Linguistics (2.4) 4. understand and compare multiple views on a certain problem in a subfield of second-language acquisition (3.1) and understand the nature and function of applied linguistics research and of the interrelationships between the various subfields (3.2) 5. report orally and in writing in English on ideas and research from applied linguistics (4.1) |

Omschrijving | This module gives an overview of factors that may influence the ways in which an L2 is learned and used, of theories of L2 learning and teaching, and of approaches to L2 acquisition research. Empirical data supporting the various theories and current approaches to research will also be critically examined. On completion of this module students will be familiar enough with current theories and approaches to be able to select and apply a relevant one to a particular area of research taking the different factors into account. | ||||||||
