Omschrijving | Throughout the world, gender and sexuality remain contested categories within local, regional, and national contexts. Despite such diversity, in recent years we’ve witnessed large-scale transnational and even global movements including especially digitally mediated campaigns from the #MeToo to the #SayHerName movement first launched in the United States. But how have such movements impacted communities who may understand such gendered categories differently? Local connections to global currents inevitably involve culturally and politically specific relations embedded within various communities. It therefore becomes difficult to assume universal categories of gender and sex. Because of this diversity, in this course we seek to examine how gender and sexuality are recognized and valued differently in various contexts within the global arena. Further, we seek to complicate these terms beyond the sometimes over-generalized understandings within second or third wave feminist theory. Finally, we seek to compare and contrast how particular categories of gender, (race) and/or sex draw upon the unique histories and relations embedded within local and global culture. In short, we aim to provide an intersectional approach towards examining categories of gender and sexuality as contested in the global sphere. | ||||||||
