Leerdoelen | Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to: critically examine Digital Humanities tools and methods (using tool criticism) and present their critical examinations. They are furthermore able to visualize data for a typical digital humanities research question, including deciding which visualization type is the most suitable (given the dataset and the intended audience) and produce the visualization (i.e. converting the numeric or textual dataset into a graphical representation). Below, these learning outcomes are associated with those of the Communication and Information Science (CIW) Master curriculum. 1. Knowledge of and insight in the theory about Digital Humanities tools and method(ologies), demonstrated in the successful completion of course assignments (1.1). 2. Knowledge of and demonstrated skills in applying taught methods (2.1). 3. Demonstrated ability to apply methods and techniques when independently designing and conducting research (2.2). 4. Demonstrated originality and creativity in applying ideas about tools and methods in the Digital Humanities (2.4). 5. Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate theories, tools, and methods in the Digital Humanities (3.1). 6. Demonstrated ability to systematically and creatively deal with complex questions and topic-related issues, and form a critical perspective (3.2). 7. Demonstrated ability to monitor the development of the Digital Humanities field (or a specific subfield), accordingly updating one’s own knowledge, understanding, and skills (5.2). |

Omschrijving | This methods course allows students to explore how particular digital humanities tools allow us to know what we know. The course focuses on particular tools and methods, giving students a chance to use, question, and reflect on how these tools afford knowledge. During course lectures, guest speakers introduce students to state-of-the-art tools and DH methods. In the accompanying labs, students explore more tools that could help them answer research questions in the humanities. It is a course in the ‘data processing’ learning pathway and teaches students how tools are developed within digital humanities and how their utility and impact can be assessed. In this course unit we also focus on student’s own critical reflection on their own use of tools and methods, as part of their preparatory work on their MA thesis. | ||||||||
