Leerdoelen | This course will introduce students to the multidisciplinary topic of diversity in education, both in theory and as an empirical reality. The course does so from a cross-national perspective. Alongside academic reflection on diversity in education as an object of study, using concepts, theories and notions from the field of educational studies and other relevant fields, we will look for ways to apply this knowledge in a practical manner to contemporary issues that may be relevant a variety of educational settings. The focus is on linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as on the interplay of both. Lectures on a selection of topics provide an overview of the latest theories and empirical results on the focal aspects of the field. In addition, exercises and student presentations on several topics around diversity in education will provide opportunities to gain hands-on knowledge. In addition, research skills for empirical educational research will be provided and applied in a research project. Students will present the results of their research in a poster presentation. |

Omschrijving | At the end of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Recognise the main concepts and theories relevant for the study of diversity in education. (1.1.) 2. Discuss various aspects of bi-, tri, and multilingual education, as well as of multicultural educational settings (1.3.) 3. Analyse the position of ethnolinguistic minorities in educational settings, taking into account attitudes, infrastructure and didactical factors (1.5.) 4. Set up a small research project on diversity in education (2.1.) 5. Compose a poster presentation that lucidly conveys the findings of research on an issue of diversity in education (4.1.) 6. Compose both written and oral forms of communication that lucidly convey essential information about diversity in education to diverse audiences in an appealing manner (4.1.) 7. Critically assess, through a comparative analysis, the benefits and challenges of multilingualism and multiculturalism in education and work through them in a creative manner (5.1) 8. Design solutions for issues of diversity in education (5.2.) |
