| Leerdoelen | Upon successful completion of the course unit (Minority Representation in Literature and the Arts I and II), students are able to: 1. discuss mainstream movements in literary history, especially the relationship between nationalism and literary movements. 2. apply fundamental concepts of narrative analysis (methods), semiotics and sociology of literature to (minority) works of art. 3. place minority representations in a larger socio-political context. 4. discuss minority representations in relation to language and identity formation, belonging and recognition. 5. apply these concepts in critical pieces of writing and thinking about minority literature and art. 6. present their ideas and analyses in a thoughtful, coherent and engaging manner to their audience. 7. reflect on their own position and practices of minority representation. |

| Omschrijving | The disadvantaged societal positions many minorities find themselves in are reflected in literature and art. At the same time, however, these offer spaces of resistance. In this course, we explore recognition and identity formation in these spaces, using a number of examples from localised and migrant minority literatures. In part one of this course, we looked at the situation various minorities find themselves in regarding representation. In this part, we will re-cast our focus and study the form minority representations take. Through looking at sociological and narratological approaches to literature and art, this course offers students the tools to engage with minority representations in an in-depth manner. | ||||||||||||||||
