Omschrijving | Many linguistic and ethnic minorities find themselves in a disadvantaged social position. This disadvantaged social position is often mirrored in the arts, culture and media of societies in which the dominant culture leaves little room for the genuine expression of alternative languages and ways of life. When minorities do appear in a television pr ogramme, literary work or sports report in the media, they will regularly be framed in stereotypical ways, find their identities misrepresented and have difficulties to be heard on their own terms. At the same time, arts, culture and media have often been used as tools for emancipatory projects, t0 ‘set the record straight’ about what life as a minority really is like and to let the voices of marginalised communities be heard. In Minority Representations in Arts, Culture and Media I, we looked at how arts, culture and media relate to society. In this course, we do so as well, but will focus on narrative arts: what stories do films, books, theatre plays, songs, etc. tell about the position of minorities in society? And do these stories merely mirror society a s it is, including structures of power and dominance, thus leaving as little room for minority identities as society itself? Or do they serve as a space for resistance, from where artists can intervene in society and attempt to create a better understandin g and bring about justice? And what is the role of the artist, as a link between the artwork, the artistic field of practice and society at large? |
