Leerdoelen	Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to: 1. Discuss key concepts of minority studies (1.1) 2. Discuss key political and cultural debates concerning minorities, especially migrant minorities in Europe (1.2) 3. Discuss key events in the history of minorities in contemporary Europe from a global perspective (1.6) 4. Construct written reports on minority issues in which both media and academic sources are processed, and in which a correct system of annotation is used. (4.3.) 5. Use feedback to improve an argument (4.3.) 6. Interpret current societal and cultural issues concerning minorities in contemporary Europe, using insights from the academic study of these issues (5.1.). 7. Recognise both the linguistic and social dimensions of minority issues in contemporary Europe (2.3.)
Omschrijving	National cultures in Europe are not as monolithic as they might seem. European nation states contain all kinds of groups of people who differ from the mainstream of the social majority: minorities. First this course, which focuses on post 1945 history, introduces students to so-called localized minorities, who (claim to) share a language, a history, ethnic traits, &c. On the other hand, as a consequence of the ongoing process of globalization, there are large groups of migrants recently immigrated into Europe which are often seen as migrant minorities. Whereas the localized minorities are the embodiment of Europe’s ideal of cultural and linguistic diversity, the migrant minorities usually are ‘invited’ to integrate, also linguistically and culturally speaking. Over the seven weeks of this course students will receive a thorough overview of the great cultural diversity of Europe in recent history, the most dominant points of view held on minorities, as well as on the gains and threats of multicultural society. Through reading and discussing texts by major authors in this field students will gain knowledge to help them understand how conflicts come about and how they can be avoided or solved.
