Omschrijving Cultural heritage is constructed in relation to religious processes, power structures, identity formation, tourism and economic developments. Cultural heritage often has been used to impose a dominant culture on minority groups, but has increasingly become a means for minorities to present, safeguard and sometimes even strengthen their traditions and identity as well. This course offers an introduction to the study of cultural heritage with a focus on (indigenous and new) minority groups.

The first part of the course consists of an introduction to the field of heritage studies. In the second part we apply our theoretical knowledge as we embark on a number of field trips to museums, archives, municipalities and cultural organizations in the three northern provinces of the Netherlands. You will conduct fieldwork on cultural heritage mediation in one of these provinces.
