Leerdoelen | Upon successful completion of the course unit, students can: 1. Recognise and distinguish the most important theories and concepts from scholarly literature on cultural or romantic nationalism especially among European linguistic minorities (OER 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.6, 2.2, 3.2) 2. Discuss the relevance of a specific theoretical concept for a given case study in a short oral presentation that includes a Q&A session (OER 4.1) 3. Summarise a discussion among peers in the form of a short well-written text for a general audience (OER 2.1, 4.3). 4. Express possible questions while reading academic articles relating these to theoretical concepts and empirical data (OER 3.1, 5.1) 5. Reproduce literature in a given (Chicago Manual) reference and annotation style (OER 4.3) 6. List, identify and compare European linguistic minorities (OER 1.1) |

Omschrijving | Almost every European nation state houses one or more groups of people who speak a language different from the national majority language. These (ethno)linguistic minorities by definition do not have political sovereignty. Some of these, such as the Catalans in Spain, the Scots in the UK or the Russian-speaking population in the eastern provinces of Ukraine, fiercely strive for a nation-state of their own; others, like for instance the Frisians in the Netherlands or the Sorbs in Germany, seem content with whatever cultural autonomy they have. As long as minorities do not have a state territory of their own, their history, language and/or culture are the most important means of binding them together and creating a specific sense of community. In this course students will learn about European cultural diversity. How did minority cultures develop over the course of the last two centuries? How did they fight for recognition of their own cultures? Students will also learn to understand the differences between these indigenous non-migrant cultures and migrant cultures. |

Opmerkingen | Bureau Studentzaken tekent eerstejaars, premaster en bijvakstudenten in in Progress. De werkgroepintekening in Nestor gebeurt door het secretariaat cluster Nederlands. Indien de werkgroep waarin je bent ingedeeld niet naar wens is kun je zelf in Nestor van werkgroep wisselen tot en met de 1e collegeweek. Dit kan alleen als de werkgroep van je keus niet vol is. Recidivisten die alleen tentamen hoeven te maken wordt ontmoedigd om zich aan te melden voor het vak in Progress. Zij kunnen door het secretariaat worden toegevoegd aan de cursus in Nestor. Je kunt hiervoor een mail sturen naar sec-millc@rug.nl. De faculteit behoudt zich het recht voor wijzigingen aan te brengen in het vakaanbod, het aantal groepen en de roostering. | ||||||||||||||||
